Frequently Asked Questions
1. What Is Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a combined surgical plan designed to correct changes in the breasts and body contour that occur especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding, within a single session.
In this combination:
- Breast volume is increased with implants and/or fat injection,
- HD (High Definition) Liposuction is performed on the abdomen, waist, back and other suitable areas to highlight muscle lines and body contours,
all in one surgery. The aim is to restore the body shape after the motherhood process to a more dynamic, younger and better-proportioned appearance in harmony with the overall body.
2. In Which Situations Is the Breast Augmentation and HD Liposuction Combination Preferred?
This combination is generally preferred when:
- There is loss of volume, emptiness or upper-pole deflation in the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- The patient wants her breasts to look fuller, perkier and more symmetrical in clothing,
and at the same time, in the abdomen, waist and back area:
- There is fat accumulation after pregnancy and loss of waist definition,
- There are rolls on the flanks and back,
- The lines of the abdominal muscles are no longer visible,
and when:
- Instead of classic liposuction, a contouring approach is requested that highlights muscle lines and aims to give the body a more “fit” silhouette,
- The patient wishes to correct both breast and body contour under a single anaesthesia and manage everything with one recovery period.
In some patients, due to safe operation time and general condition, these procedures may be divided into separate sessions. The decision for combined surgery is made with patient safety as the top priority.
3. Who Is a Suitable Candidate for This Combined Procedure?
Suitable candidates are typically those who:
- Are in a general state of health appropriate for surgery,
- Have ideally completed their pregnancy and breastfeeding period,
- Do not have a very high body mass index,
- Have relatively stable weight and do not plan major weight changes in the near future,
- Clearly express that they want both increased breast volume and more defined body lines,
- Have realistic expectations regarding scars, recovery, as well as compression garment and bra use,
- Are able to comply with postoperative recommendations on movement, rest and follow-up visits.
In patients planning pregnancy in the near future, the timing of abdominal and body-contouring procedures should be evaluated jointly with the surgeon. A new pregnancy may again change the body shape.
4. Preoperative Evaluation and Planning Process
Before surgery:
- The patient’s medical history, chronic diseases, medications and allergies are evaluated in detail.
- A breast examination is performed; depending on age, family history and risk profile, breast ultrasound and/or mammography may be requested.
- Breast volume, degree of sagging, rib cage structure and skin thickness are assessed to determine the appropriate implant size, shape and placement plan.
- In areas planned for HD Liposuction (abdomen, waist, back, lateral chest line, and when necessary thighs, etc.), fat distribution, skin quality and the current status of muscle lines are analysed.
The targeted contour is discussed with the patient, for example:
- A more defined midline on the abdomen,
- Emphasis of the waist–hip ratio,
- Clearer light and shadow transitions on the back and side areas.
- Required blood tests, anaesthesia assessment and other investigations are completed.
- Recommendations regarding discontinuation or reduction of blood-thinning medications, certain supplements and smoking before surgery are provided.
The aim is to create a safe surgical basis and to establish a clear and realistic framework regarding the results that can be achieved.
5. How Is Breast Augmentation Performed in a Mommy Makeover? (Implant and/or Fat Injection)
Breast augmentation is usually planned with:
- Silicone breast implants,
- And in suitable patients, a combination of implants + fat injection.
Augmentation with implants
An implant of suitable size and shape is placed into the breast, generally through:
- An incision in the inframammary fold (under-breast crease),
- In some cases, an incision around the areola.
Depending on rib cage structure and tissue thickness, the implant may be positioned:
- Under the breast gland (subglandular),
- Under the chest muscle (submuscular),
- Or in a dual-plane position (between the muscle and the breast tissue).
The goal is to achieve breast fullness that is natural, balanced and in harmony with the rest of the body.
Support with fat injection
Fat harvested and processed during HD Liposuction can be injected into the breasts in suitable patients in order to:
- Soften upper-pole fullness,
- Provide a more natural transition in the décolleté area.
Note on breastfeeding
When breast augmentation is planned after pregnancy and breastfeeding, the procedure is performed with as much respect as possible to milk glands and ducts. However, each patient’s breast anatomy and the technique used may differ, and future breastfeeding capacity can vary from person to person. This should be discussed in detail before surgery.
6. What Is HD Liposuction? How Does It Differ from Classic Liposuction?
HD (High Definition) Liposuction, unlike classic liposuction:
- Aims not only to reduce volume but also to highlight muscle lines and body contours,
- Is often performed together with energy-assisted techniques (such as ultrasonic/Vaser, etc.),
- Is a detailed body-contouring method that takes into account the distribution of light and shadow on the body.
In classic liposuction the focus is on reducing regional fat; in HD Liposuction:
- Lines that suggest a “fit” abdominal appearance,
- Emphasising the waist indentation,
- Making muscle–fat transitions on the back and side areas more distinct
are targeted.
Therefore, HD Liposuction requires more meticulous planning and significant surgical experience.
7. On Which Areas Is HD Liposuction Performed and How Is It Done?
Depending on the patient’s needs and the desired look, HD Liposuction can be applied to:
- The anterior abdomen (midline, lateral lines),
- Waist and flanks,
- Back (especially the bra line area),
- Lateral chest (in women, in a way that supports the breast contour),
- In some cases, the hip region and thighs.
Main steps of the procedure:
Marking
- While the patient is standing, areas of fat accumulation and the muscle lines to be emphasised (for example, abdominal midline and side lines) are marked by the surgeon.
Tumescent solution
- A special solution that helps reduce bleeding and control pain is injected into the treatment areas.
Energy-assisted liposuction (e.g. Vaser, etc.)
- Ultrasonic or similar energy is used to make the fat tissue more fluid.
- The aim is to loosen fat tissue while respecting surrounding structures as much as possible.
Fat removal and contouring
- As fat is aspirated with fine cannulas, deeper work in some areas and more superficial work in others is performed to create highlights and shadows.
- Rather than fully exposing every muscle, the goal is a natural but defined appearance in harmony with the patient’s body structure.
In some patients, specific regions may additionally be supported with fat injection to maintain overall body balance (for example, softening the hip contour).
8. The First Postoperative Days: Pain, Swelling, Drains and Hospital Stay
After surgery:
- The initial hours are spent in recovery until the patient is fully awake and stable.
- A feeling of tightness, fullness and pain in the breasts and in areas where HD Liposuction was performed is normal.
- In some patients, drains may be placed in the breast or liposuction areas to remove fluid that may accumulate in the early period.
In the first days:
- Swelling in the abdominal and waist areas,
- Puffiness over the muscle lines,
- A feeling of pressure in the breasts
are considered expected findings.
Patients usually stay in hospital for 1 night; during this time pain control, first walks, fluid balance and dressings are monitored.
9. Staying in Istanbul, Follow-Up Visits and the Return Home
For patients coming from abroad or from another city:
- Staying in Istanbul for about 7–10 days is generally a safe interval so that the first check-up, drain removal (if used), dressing changes and adjustment of compression garments and bra can be completed.
During this period, the patient is informed in detail about:
- How long and in what way the compression garment and bra should be used,
- How to get up, lie down and change positions,
- When and how to shower,
- What to look out for along the incision lines.
Before long flights, the risk of clot formation and the effects of prolonged sitting must be considered, and flight timing should always be planned together with the surgeon.
10. Returning to Social Life, Work and Sports
Home activities
- In the first days it is helpful to have support at home; especially patients with small children should temporarily limit lifting children and standing for long periods.
Return to work
- Most patients can return to desk-based work within 10–14 days.
- For physically demanding jobs, a period of about 3–4 weeks may be required, depending on the nature of the work.
Return to sports
- Light walking is encouraged in the early weeks at the level recommended by the surgeon.
- For intense exercises that put strain on areas highlighted by HD Liposuction (abdomen, waist, back muscles), it is usually necessary to wait 6–8 weeks.
Final timing and intensity are determined at control visits based on the individual’s healing rate.
11. Use of Compression Garment and Bra, Swelling and Final Body Shape
Compression garment
- A body compression garment helps maintain contour after HD Liposuction, reduce swelling and support the skin in adapting to the underlying tissues.
- In most patients, it is recommended to wear it for 4–6 weeks, especially for most of the day during the first weeks.
Bra
- A supportive/sports bra is necessary after breast augmentation to keep the implant in position, support the new breast shape and control swelling.
- Regular use for about 4–6 weeks is usually advised.
Swelling and settling of body shape
- In the first weeks, HD Liposuction areas may appear more swollen or even “exaggerated”; this is due to oedema and tissue response.
- As swelling subsides, the shape becomes clearer within 4–6 weeks.
- It generally takes about 3–6 months for muscle lines and light-shadow effects to reach a natural, settled appearance.
12. Possible Risks and Complications
As with all surgeries, the combined procedure of breast augmentation + HD Liposuction carries certain risks:
- Bleeding, infection
- Delayed wound healing, wound breakdown
- Breast asymmetry, implant displacement or capsular contracture (hardening around the implant)
In HD Liposuction areas:
- Temporary or rarely permanent changes in sensation,
- Surface irregularities or contour deformities,
- Prolonged swelling and a feeling of firmness,
Additionally:
- Fluid accumulation (seroma), bruising
- General surgical risks such as deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs)
To minimise these risks:
- Appropriate patient selection,
- Detailed preoperative assessment,
- An experienced surgeon and medical team,
- Adherence to postoperative recommendations (compression garment, walking, smoking cessation, etc.)
are extremely important.
13. Results, Expectation Management and Body Image
The goals of this combined procedure are to:
- Give the breasts a fuller and shapelier appearance that harmonises with overall body proportions,
- Create a fit, more defined yet natural contour in the abdomen, waist and back areas,
- Support positive changes in post-pregnancy body image, both physically and emotionally.
In the early weeks, due to oedema, bruising and tightness, the results may look different than the final outcome.
- The overall form becomes largely apparent within 6–8 weeks.
- It takes several months for scars to mature, muscle lines to look fully natural and for the patient to adjust to her new body shape.
The most satisfying results are seen in patients who have realistic expectations, maintain stable weight, attend regular follow-ups and consistently follow the surgeon’s recommendations.
14. Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be able to take care of my children after this surgery?
In the first weeks, activities such as lifting children, frequent bending and standing for long periods should be limited. Having support during this period is important. Over time, responsibilities can be gradually increased as advised by your surgeon.
Will my breast implants last a lifetime?
Breast implants are produced for long-term use; however, they should not be considered a “lifetime, never-changing” solution. Over time, your body can change, and capsular contracture or other reasons may require re-evaluation. Regular follow-ups are important.
Will I gain fat again after HD Liposuction?
Fat cells that are removed do not come back; however, remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain. Therefore, healthy nutrition, physical activity and weight control after surgery are critical to maintaining the HD look.
When will I see the final results?
Although the first lines become visible within a few weeks, it usually takes 3–6 months for swelling to fully resolve, HD lines to look completely natural and scars to mature.
Will I lose weight with this surgery?
Although some fat is removed with HD Liposuction, this is not a weight-loss surgery. The best results are seen in patients who are close to their ideal weight and whose goals are more related to shaping and defining contours rather than losing kilos.
