Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

1. What Is Arm Lift Surgery?

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to correct sagging, looseness and excess skin, especially on the inner upper arm.

Due to weight gain and loss, ageing or genetic factors, the skin in the arm area can lose elasticity and may not tighten up despite exercise. The goal of an arm lift is to refine the contour of the upper arm, tighten the skin and achieve a smoother, firmer appearance.

This operation can be performed on its own or combined with other procedures such as breast, tummy or body contouring surgery.

2. In Which Situations Is Arm Lift Preferred?

Arm lift surgery is usually considered in the following situations:

• Noticeable skin laxity and sagging on the inner upper arm
• Excess skin after weight loss
• Feeling uncomfortable with how the arms look when choosing clothes
• Persistent laxity in the arm area despite sports and exercise
• Feeling self-conscious about the appearance of the arms in photos or in the mirror

The main goal here is to reduce aesthetic concerns and help the person feel more comfortable and confident.

3. Who Is a Good Candidate for Arm Lift Surgery?

Suitable candidates for an arm lift are:

• Individuals whose general health status is appropriate for surgery,
• Those who smoke are advised to reduce or quit smoking before and after the operation,
• People whose weight fluctuations have stabilised as much as possible and who are at or close to their ideal weight,
• Individuals with realistic expectations regarding the scars that will remain after surgery,
• People who are bothered by the appearance of their arms and willing to understand the process.

In cases such as pregnancy, uncontrolled chronic illnesses or clotting disorders, a detailed evaluation is essential. Suitability is determined by the surgeon after examination and medical history review.

4. Preoperative Evaluation Process

Before an arm lift:

• The patient’s medical history, current medications and any previous surgeries are reviewed.
• The amount of skin, fat tissue, degree of sagging and skin quality in the arm area are carefully assessed.
• If necessary, blood tests, anaesthesia evaluation and other relevant investigations are requested.
• The patient’s expectations are discussed; the changes that surgery can provide and the location of scars are explained clearly.

In the preoperative period:

• If the patient uses blood-thinning medications, these are adjusted as deemed appropriate by the doctor.
• If the patient smokes, reducing or quitting smoking is recommended.

This process is important for both a safe operation and a healthy recovery period.

5. How Is Arm Lift Surgery Performed?

Arm lift surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes approximately 1.5–3 hours.

The technique used varies according to the patient’s arm structure and the degree of sagging:

• If sagging is limited and mostly on the inner arm: A shorter incision can be made along the inner surface of the arm to remove excess skin and, if necessary, some fat tissue.
• If sagging and excess skin are more pronounced: An incision extending from the elbow towards the armpit along the inner/back side of the arm is made. Excess skin and tissues are removed and the skin is tightened upwards.

In most cases, the incision line is planned along the inner or back surface of the arm so that it is less visible in daily life.

In some patients, liposuction (fat removal) may be combined with the arm lift to further slim and refine the arm contour.

At the end of the operation, the incision lines are closed with sutures, dressings are applied and, if needed, a drain may be placed.

6. Postoperative Process and Recovery Period

In the first hours after surgery, the patient is kept under observation for awakening and monitoring. In most cases, staying in hospital overnight is recommended.

In the first days:

• Swelling, mild bruising and a feeling of tightness in the arm area may occur; this is expected and temporary.
• Pain and discomfort are managed with painkillers and medications prescribed by the surgeon.

After discharge:

• The use of a special bandage or compression garment that supports the arm area is generally recommended.
• It is important to avoid sudden movements that lift the arms too high and to avoid carrying heavy loads.

Return to work:

• For desk-based jobs, most patients can return in about 7–10 days.
• For physically demanding jobs that require active use of the arms, returning after 3–4 weeks may be planned (according to the doctor’s advice).

Sports:

• Light walking can be started relatively early.
• Exercises that strain the arms and weight training are usually allowed after 4–6 weeks.

Because each patient heals at a different pace, follow-up appointments are important to ensure a safe and well-monitored recovery.

7. Scars, Compression Garment Use and Arm Movements

Since arm lift surgery is a surgical procedure, it does leave scars. These scars:

• Are usually located on the inner or back surface of the arm,
• Appear as linear scars that gradually fade and mature over time.

The appearance of scars depends on skin type, genetic factors and how carefully the area is cared for during healing. If necessary, your surgeon may recommend special creams or treatments for scar management.

Compression garment / bandage use:

• Regular use during the first weeks is important to support the new arm shape and reduce swelling.

Arm movements:

• Gentle everyday movements are beneficial for circulation, but sudden, wide or strenuous arm movements should be avoided initially.
• The level of movement is gradually increased at follow-up visits.

8. Possible Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, arm lift surgery also carries certain risks:

• Bleeding, infection
• Wound dehiscence (opening of the incision) or delayed healing
• Changes in skin sensation (temporary or rarely permanent)
• Asymmetry or scars that are more noticeable than expected
• General surgical risks such as blood clot formation

Most of these risks can be reduced through appropriate patient selection, proper surgical technique and adherence to postoperative instructions. All such possibilities are explained to the patient before surgery and the process is planned transparently.

9. Arm Lift Results and Expectation Management

The goal of arm lift surgery is to improve the contour of the upper arm, reduce sagging and achieve a firmer appearance.

Results:

• Become clearer within a few weeks as swelling decreases and tissues settle,
• While scar maturation takes place over several months.

Expecting a completely scar-free result is not realistic; the aim is to improve the arm shape while keeping scars as hidden and acceptable as possible.

The most natural and satisfying results are seen in patients who undergo surgery with realistic expectations.
